Patrick Tuohy RHA (1894-1936) "A Young Girl Seated in an Interior" Oil on canvas, 24 3/4" x 21" (63 x 53cm), signed. Provenance: Ex-Collection AIB; Corporate Collection, Dublin. Exhibited: Most probably at The RHA in 1919 (no.212) under the title "Study of a Young Girl" (Price £50). Literature: 'Patrick Tuohy from conversations with his friends', by Patrick Murphy (2004), No.112, pg.166, which comments: The Allied Irish Bank catalogue of 1986 describes this painting as an exceptionally sensitve example of Tuohy's portraiture. It is indeed a beautiful portrait of Albert Power's young daughter, May Power, posing for the artist in his attic studio in North Frederick Street. She is seated facing the artist with her bare arms folded, and her raven hair frames a face serious from prolonged posing. In the background are still-life objects, frames and canvases picked out romantically by the daylight filtering in from a series of windows in the top left-hand corner of the canvas. The figure is perfectly placed in the lower half of the canvas and the diagonals of the background make it a very successful composition. The painterliness of the brushwork is unusually reminiscent of the English painter Walter Sickert (1869-1942), who was painting and teaching at that time in London.
Dublin born, Tuohy studied under William Orpen at the Metropolitan School. A highly accomplished painter, influenced by Velaquez, he suffered severe depression and anxiety. After emigrating to America, he committed suicide at the age of 36.
